Newcastle have won the 2022 edition of the Stan Calvert Cup, winning 60.75 to 50.25 in points.
After a long absence of four years the Stan Calvert Cup competition had been resurrected by Newcastle and Northumbria University. The varsity event was named after Alnwick-born Stan Calvert, who was Newcastle University's first Director of Sport from 1981, having been involved with sport at the university since the early 1960s.
Northumbria had been on a winning streak of five years, winning from 2014 to 2018 before the event was unfortunately put on hold for various reasons.
Our racket sport teams made a significant contribution to Newcastle's overall total, all chalking up wins:
Badminton Men's 1 won 7-1
Badminton Women's 1 won 8-0
Squash Men's 1 won 3-2
Squash Women's 1 won 5-0
Tennis Men's 1 won 5-1
Tennis Women's 1 won 6-0
Newcastle will have to defend their title in 2023 with both universities planning to build on the success of this year's event. Well done the posh!
